Sculptor Louise Bourgeois

Over the course of 70 years, Louise Bourgeois created an extensive body of work. She worked with a variety mediums including drawing, paintings and sculpture. Her early works reflect her childhood in Paris. Her father, a philanderer, had placed his mistress at the family house while Bourgeois a child. She resented her parents' strained relationship and used her art as a form of therapy to express her feelings.

Bourgeois used spiders throughout her career as a motif and associated them often with her mother. She grew up with tapestries, and she began to connect weaving with her mother's care. Bourgeois explored the female protector aspect of arachnids in her famous sculptures and drawings.

Her first arachnid drawings date from 1947. This was the beginning a series of work that led to her famous spider sculptures. These massive pieces are a fusion between art, architecture and science. The arachnid combines body, head and wing elements from an insect to create a sculptural shape that is both sinister and sexy.

While many people are afraid of spiders, Bourgeois saw them as weavers and makers who build large structures with their bodies. Her spiders were typically made out of heavy bronze, steel or iron. The delicate legs on her spiders belie the weight.

Bourgeois has continued to use spiders as symbols of femininity, protection and feminism in her later sculptures. In particular, she crafted a series of works in the 1990s that feature the arachnid as a female figure.

The artist said once that the spider was a symbol for her mother's traits and characteristics, including "deliberately, cleverly, patiently, soothingly, reasonable, delicate, subtle, indispensable and neat as a web."

This was reminiscent of her personality, and she described herself at one point as "a wild animal some of the times." However, her anger would often be expressed through her artwork. Fallen Woman 1981 is a sculpture that features a woman’s skull attached to a handle with a phallic shape, similar to a club.

The theme of violence against woman would be a recurring one in her sculptures. She portrayed women she was familiar with as fallen from grace. Her body became a weapon in order to convey her thoughts.

Another motif is the hand. Give or Take2002, for instance, features a two -handed limb. It opens and closes depending on how it's manipulated. This piece reflects on the tensions of dependence and independence.

She created Personages 1946-1955, which are among her early sculptures. These totemic wooden sculptures depicted individuals she was close to. The figures were a reflection on her own identity and her homelessness for her French family.

Maman casts a strong psychological and cognitive shadow is one of her most recent sculptures. She said that she was still not able to let her anger about her childhood and her parents' pain go, but her sculptures were helping her deal with this difficult emotion.
